The name "Spartina" is taken from two sources:
It is the latin, biological name for one of the common beach and salt marsh cord grasses common to the area; spartina alterniflora
It is the title of a novel, Spartina, by John Casey that tells the life story
of a South County fisherman and this Great Salt Pond. The novel won
the National Book Award for Fiction in 1989.
Spartina Cove Marina:
Is located on the northwestern shore of Great Salt Pond and has access to the Atlantic Ocean and Block Island Sound via Pt. Judith (3.5 miles). The marina is in the southeast corner of the property accessible by path from all the homes or by bicycle or car via Pond Street.
The marina consists of two community slips - one for Spartina visiting guests and one for a possible community boat. At the marina you will find our dock house and a rack for canoes, dinghies, kayaks, or small daysailers. Salt water fishing and shellfishing are excellent here and the cove and surrounds is home to a swan pair, great blue herons, egrets, and a grandfather wild turkey.
Canoes and kayaks can enjoy the mini-beach at nearby Commock Island (town owned) or venture up into "the pots", a lovely tidal pond to the West of the property. Serious paddlers can venture down pond to the beaches ofGalileeand Matunuck.
The Spartina Cove marina is maintained and managed by the larger Billington Cove Marina where Spartina Cove residents have first rights to rent slips for their larger boats. Boston Whaler style fishing boats are available for daily rental at the marina; ask for Dave Phillips.
There is also a public launching ramp at the marina.
Neighborhood:
South Kingstown and the Narragansett/Matunuck area enjoy a wonderful set of assets:
Perhaps the best schools in the state with reasonable tax rates.
The area is rich in revolutionary war history and has preserved a variety of historical and natural features including:
the village of Kingston (site of URI),
the nearby National Wildlife refuges of Sachuset,Trustom, and Ninigret,
the remarkable beaches of Narragansett,Matunuck, and Ninigretand
nearby ferry access to Block Island
the summer stock at Matunuck's Theatre-by-the-Sea.
For more culture, Providence's fine theatre, dinning, and architecture is 30 minutes away and Newport's Art Museum, grand mansions, and cliff walk are 20 minutes away.
For practical needs, food shopping, post office, cleaners and other services and shops are all within two miles in Wakefield and Narragansett.
